Aerojet Engines Launch First Modernized GPS Satellite
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 26, 2005 – Aerojet engines powered a Delta II launch vehicle and its satellite payload in a late launch yesterday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The Boeing Delta II vehicle carried a Global Positioning System satellite, the first modernized Lockheed Martin GPS 2R-M1 satellite for military and civilian use.
Aerojet provided the second stage liquid engine and third stage control thruster on the Delta launch vehicle. Additionally, four Aerojet spin motors were used to ‘spin up’ the GPS satellite prior to the ignition of the third stage motor. Spinning of the satellite prevents it from veering off course.
The company’s 16 monopropellant thrusters also provided thrust for attitude and orbit control on the GPS satellite. Aerojet has produced the thrusters for every GPS block to date.
Aerojet will provide the second stage liquid engine and monopropellant thrusters on the next Delta II launch planned for Vandenberg AFB, CA.
