Aerojets Booster Launches Successful Missile Defense THAAD Intercept
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, announced today that its booster launched the seventh successful interceptor for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT) Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) flight test program. This was the third actual intercept test over the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) on Kauai, HI.
An interceptor-only, low endo-atmospheric test was successfully conducted at White Sands Missile Range, NM, in late June. "This test further demonstrates the strength of our national defense," said Dick Bregard, Aerojet's vice president of Defense Systems. "Aerojet is proud to be a partner in providing this critical defense capability for the war fighter, the country and our allies."
THAAD is a key element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). It provides rapidly deployable ground-based missile defense components to defeat short and long range ballistic missiles. THAAD's unique capabilities -- both within and outside the atmosphere -- enlarge the battle space to allow multiple intercept opportunities. This provides broad area coverage against threats to critical assets such as population centers, industrial resources and military forces.
