In August of 1941, Aerojet's founders were responsible for the first manned flight to use rocket assistance at launch. Jet assisted take-off motors became Aerojet's contribution to the war effort during World War II.

Aerojet's Aerobee rocket was the first to carry scientific payloads into space. It can be seen at the National Air & Space Museum.

In the mid-1960s three out of every four rockets launched from Cape Canaveral used Aerojet propulsion systems, including the Apollo program that put the first man on the Moon, with Aerojet's help.

In the 1970s, while Aerojet technology continued to play a crucial role in military and space exploration, neurosurgeons in Pasadena were using a brain probe developed by Aerojet to freeze tissue during delicate operations.

In the 1980s Aerojet became a major participant in the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), developing rocket propulsion for interceptor missiles

During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Aerojet's DSP satellites were used to detect hostile missile launches, the first time space has played a critical role in a wartime situation.
